A brief summary of the main rationales / evidence / opportunities for universities and / or students to access GOGL.

The Student experience

Almost 163, 000 students at UK universities experience abusive relationships each year.

This is 10.5 % of female students and 4.8 % male students, with full time students more likely to experience relationship abuse than any other occupational group

However, we know these figures are likely an underestimate due to large scale under-reporting.

Personal Costs

Being a victim of an abusive relationship has repercussions for students' personal and academic life, with student victims often reporting academic disengagement.

Research by the UCLan reported detrimental effects on academic progress including; distraction, poor concentration, being less productive, reduced quality of work and not fulfilling their potential.

Wellbeing Obligations

In 2021 Universities were tasked with improving their policies around domestic abuse, and recently duty of care, mental health and tackling sexual harassment have been identified as priorities for Universities.

Many abuse victims go on to have long term mental health problems, so the right support is crucial.

Employer Duty of Care

Annually 23,760 staff at UK universities report  domestic abuse, with the real figure likely to be much higher.

Absenteeism, presenteeism and staff turnover are all potential effects of DA experience.

Assisting staff and students to deal with the impact of domestic abuse far outweighs the cost of not doing so.

The Support Gap

Most universities and FE providers rely on already stretched counselling services or third sector support services.

Face to face counselling is a finite, costly resource and cannot reach those who do not wish to disclose, often due to feelings of shame, embarrassment and the stigma surrounding abuse.
